僕が「ザ・ベンザ」のシリーズ２を書き始めたのは、「ベンザイングリッシュ」の撮影が始まるかなり前のことで

す。ちょうどその時、カイル役のカイル・カードに新しい登場人物の説明と、その中にどうしても日本人ハーフを２人加えたいと言ったのを覚えてます。

その理由として僕が通ってた大学や日本語学校では、日本語を勉強している日本人ハーフがたくさんいたので、このベンザの世界にもなくてはならない存在だと思ったからです。それに、日本でキャスティングの多様性を語っている以上、俳優や女優である彼らの選択肢がいかに少ないかも語らなくてはフェアじゃありません。

当初はキャロルはシリーズ２に一話だけ出演するという想定をしていましたが、ありがたいことに先に「ベンザイングリッシュ」を撮っていたんです。そこでキャロルという人物の扱い方を理解し、同時に静香の振り幅もつかめました。

静香はパフォーマーとして素晴らしい人です。彼女の絶妙なコメディのタイミングにはいつも驚かされるし、いるだけでどんなシーンも明るくなります。シリーズ２ではシリアスな展開もありますが、どんなに暗くなっても３年前のシリーズ１の時と同じようなユーモアとコメディさを貫き通せるのは、キャロルという人物を静香が全うしているからだと思います。

まだ誰も見ていないシーンについて曖昧な表現をするのは僕は好きではありません。我慢ができません。だけど、シリーズ２の第４話に出てくる静香のシーンは、何度見ても笑ってしまいます。このシーンは編集でおそらく何百回と見ていますが、今でも笑っちゃいます。実際、静香本人とそのシーンを一緒に見たことがあったんですけど、泣くほど笑いました。なので、配信後そのシーンを見たら、ここにコメントを書き込んでください。観たらわかります。

テレビのために生まれてきた女優がいますが、静香は本当にそういう人だと思ってます。女優としても人としてもどこか誠実なところがあるから、自分の家に喜んで招待したくなるんだと思います。あの誠実さは偽りじゃありません。ホントにステキな人です。

そしてキャロルもそうだと思います、だから静香の描くキャロルがピッタリなんです。

あともう一つ、漠然としたシーンから。静香は投げ縄が得意です。この話はいつか彼女のインタビュー時に話してもらいましょう。

ってな感じでクリエイターがこういう発言をしちゃうのはあり得ないと思うんですよね。でもとにかくもうすぐシリーズが配信されます。その時にはみんなでコメント欄に集まって静香の輝きを語り合いましょう。

I started writing series 2 of “The Benza” well before we started shooting “Benza English”. At that time, I remember describing to Kyle Card (Kyle) some of the new characters and explaining that I really wanted to add two character’s that were half Japanese to the show.

My reasoning was that at my University and at my Japanese language school there were many students who were half Japanese that were studying Japanese, so it would be unusual to not have them in our world as well. Additionally, it would be unfair to talk about diversity in casting in Japan and not mention how limited options were for half-Japanese actors and actresses as well.

Initially I had only envisioned Carol joining series two for one episode, but thankfully we shot “Benza English” first. It was there that I got a chance to understand how the character could be used and got a sense for Shizuka’s range.

Shizuka is a brilliant performer. I’m always amazed at her fantastic comedic timing and how she can make any scene lighter just by being present in it. “The Benza” Series Two takes some serious turns, but I really think it’s thanks to Shizuka’s portrayal of Carol that we remain anchored in the same style of humor and comedy that we began with in series one three years ago no matter how dark the story might get.

I hate it when creators of shows write in vague terms about a scene that no one has seen yet. I can’t stand it. However, Shizuka’s got this scene in episode four of series 2 that makes me laugh to this day no matter how many times I’ve seen it. I’ve seen this scene probably hundreds of times as we’ve edited this series and it still makes me laugh. I watched it once with Shizuka and we laughed so hard we both cried. When you see that scene, come back here and comment on this blog. Trust me, you’ll know it when you see it.

There are some actresses that were born for television, and I really believe Shizuka is that type of actress. There’s something so sincere about her both as an actress and as a person that you would happily welcome her into your living room for a few hours. She’s not faking that sincerity. She is a genuine person.

I believe Carol is too, and that’s what makes Shizuka’s portrayal of Carol work.

Alright, just one more vague scene description: Shizuka’s really good with a lasso. I’ll leave that story for her to tell in an interview someday.

Ugh, it really is the worst when creators do that, isn’t it? Anyway, the series will be out soon. Let’s all plan to meet in the comments section and glow about how amazing Shizuka is then together.
